Promoting healthy and sustainable work-lives
Wellbeing at Work is an increasingly salient topic on the scientific and political agendas in many Western countries. In the scientific world the concept of wellbeing at work is typically addressed from the vantage point of organizational psychology, but to meet the challenges of ageing working populations that increasingly may be characterized by chronic diseases or disabilities, the inquiry into the concept of wellbeing at work needs to widen its scope.
Bring together state of the art knowledge from different scientific fields
The Third conference about Wellbeing at Work will be held in Copenhagen, from 26th to 28th May 2014 and is arranged by The National Research Center for the Working Environment, NRCWE. The conference aims to bring together state of the art knowledge from psychology, epidemiology, physiology, and occupational and social medicine to articulate a coherent research agenda on wellbeing at work that is able to capture the challenges at the labour market facing many Western countries. Earlier conferences have been held in Manchester (2012) and in Helsinki (2010).
Many different topics at the Copenhagen conference
To meet this challenge the NRCWE therefore will make a call for abstracts on oral presentations or posters on variety of different topics. At the moment the topics are the following:

- The interplay between psychosocial work conditions and wellbeing at work
- The interplay between physical work environment and wellbeing at work (e.g. physical factors, safety at work, shift work and night work, light and wellbeing)
- The role of leadership and management in wellbeing at work
- Workplace interventions with wellbeing and health promotion
- Demographic changes and wellbeing at work (e.g. Ageing workforces and lifestyle-related changes)
- Wellbeing and the management of chronic disease at the workplace (e.g. stroke, diabetes, arthritis, back pain, neck pain and allergies)
- Restructuring at workplaces and resilience of workers and teams
- Wellbeing at work and presenteeism
- Wellbeing at work and social innovation
- Wellbeing at work and technological innovation
- Models for implementing wellbeing at work (e.g.WHO, Healthy Workplace: framework and model, NIOSH, Total Worker Health strategy and The biopsychosocial framework and model)
- Gender and wellbeing at work
- Measuring wellbeing at work (e.g. Questionnaires, SMS tracking and objective measures)
- Case studies of wellbeing at workplaces.
Wellbeing at work – a definition
A long, healthy, safe and productive working life - the essence of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work’s goal for employees in a modern and sustainable workplace. The goal may be obtained by ensuring the employees’ wellbeing at workplaces through improvement of the working environment and through the general health of the employees. Wellbeing at work specifically in relation to the workplace consists of a combination of
- a safe working environment without risks of accidents
- a healthy working environment exercising full control of hazardous compounds, noise, physical deterioration and negative psychosocial exposures
- positive factors in the sense of good leadership, acknowledgement, influence, support, pleasure in work and development
- necessary facilities and frames with the aim to strengthen the physical capacity among the employees
